More zoo photos.

Another overcast day - but you have to take the good with the bad - it is Europe!

Same Riga, Latvia Zoo - different day

All I said was, "please smile for me," and this was the reaction I received!

PANERIAI - Unfortunately arrived here on Easter Sunday and the museum was closed. Over 100,000 people were murdered by the Nazis between July 1941 and July 1944 at this site which is 10 km southwest of Vilnius. Around half of the city's Jewish population - about 35,000 people - had been murdered here by the end of the first three months of the German occupation. Plaques in Lithuanian, Hebrew, and Russian, honor those who were killed here.

Additional photos of Trakai Castle

The old town of Trakia is west of Vilnius and located on the Galves, Totoriskiy & Bernardiny Lakes. Famous for its beautiful setting and legendary Castle of Trakai.

To reach the Upper Castle and Gediminas Tower one can travel by a small funicular railway from inside the courtyard of the National Museum or on foot from Sereikiskiy Park. The Upper Castle was built to protect the city from crusaders.

Street scene in Uzupis.
Church of the Holy Mother of God - main temple of the Lithuanian Orthodox Church. The oldest walls of the church date to the 15th Century.
This bronze angel, created by sculptor Romas Vilciauskas, is a sympol of Uzupis.

Uzupis is a "republic of artists". Name means "place beyond the river" - once a red-light district. Located on the bank of the Vilnia River, Uzupis is now one of the more prestigious and expensive districts of Vilnius.

Everyone was bundled up, including this cute Lithuanian child who was fascinated with Cody. The large building is the Town Hall.

More photos taken of Cathedral Square. The statue is a monument to the founder and famous ruler of Lithuania, Gediminas, who lived from 1275 to 1341.

Monument to Gediminas: Founder and one of the most famous rulers of Vilnius. Lived between 1275 & 1341.
Street scene in front of Cathedral Square.

The Cathedral of St. Stanislav & St. Vladislav is the most important place of worship for the country's Catholics. The Bell Tower is situated opposite the Cathedral and an original tower of the defense wall. A clock was installed in the tower in the 17th century and chimes every 15 minutes - unique because it has no minute hand.

Lithuania - Easter Holiday - April 2010

Welcome to Vilnuis, Lithuania - Easter Holiday - where all weekend we were bundled up against the cold or sopping wet from constant drizzle. Welcome to Europe!

Mother and her baby.
Friends and family members enjoying another day at the zoo.

Seeing how rock is used here in Riga reminds me of some of the exhibits that are in the Pueblo Zoo.

Diana Johnson and friend, Lucille Paul, who is from Trinidad Tobago originally and currently living in Houston, Texas. Second photo are friends Melinda West and Lucille Paul. Melinda is at home in Fort Collins, Colorado. The third is a picture of the information signs used to inform visitors of a particular exhibit. I really like how "user friendly" they are.
